Limitations¶
Keep these in mind so setup and delivery stay predictable.
Scenes¶
- Embed In Scene (default on) makes scenes self-contained but much larger.
- With embed off, keep the source capture with the project or the object will be empty after reopen.
- Individual splats are not selectable. Selection is a wire frame / bounds, not a green point cloud.
Formats¶
- File imports keep coordinates as-is (no automatic 100× scale or Z 180° flip). Scale or rotate in Maya, or use Up Axis, if needed.
- Unbundled SOG folders are not supported - use a single
.sogpackage. - SPLAT export is base color only.
- SOG, SPZ, and compressed PLY are lossy by design.
- Import has no options dialog; export does (format, compress, KSPLAT mode, SH degree).
Export¶
- Export All requires exactly one splat in the scene.
- Strong shear on the transform is ignored (with a warning). Non-uniform scale is supported.
- Maya’s file dialog may suggest a
.plyname; the plugin corrects the extension for the format you chose. - Compress applies to PLY and NPZ only.
Viewport¶
- Maya’s viewport will not always match SuperSplat-style viewers for transparent overlap.
- Density and Viewport Primitives Limit intentionally draw fewer points for speed on large clouds.
Arnold¶
- Requires Arnold for Maya.
- Very large captures can be slow - use Primitive Percent for lookdev.
- Path-traced results may differ from dedicated splat viewers.
V-Ray¶
- Supported on Maya 2025-2027 with V-Ray loaded at import (or after a re-import).
- V-Ray CPU always works. V-Ray GPU needs V-Ray 7 Update 2+ (typical on Maya 2026+; update Maya 2025’s V-Ray if GPU is empty).
- V-Ray beauty is base color only - SH Degree does not affect V-Ray.
- The V-Ray object is a world-level
*_vrayHold/*_vrayGSsibling - do not reparent it under the splat or delete it if you need beauty. - Do not Force-unload V-Ray; disable Auto load and restart instead.
Platforms¶
- Windows only (Maya 2022-2027, x64).
- macOS and Linux are not supported in this release.
